Thomas F. Porter, IV grew up in Lafayette and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1974. He obtained his law degree from Louisiana State University in 1976.
Tom has been practicing personal injury law for the past 35 years and has concentrated his practice in the area of automobile accidents; admiralty and maritime law; medical malpractice, wrongful death and general personal injury law. As a result of a multi-million dollar jury verdict in a medical malpractice trial in 1998, Tom receives numerous referrals of medical malpractice claims from attorneys and clients throughout Louisiana and Texas.
Tom has been an active member of Lafayette Parish Bar Association over the years, serving on the Ethics and Grievance Committee from 1986 through 1990, the Board of Directors from 1992 through 1997 and was President of the Bar in 1996. He has also been active in the Louisiana State Bar Association, serving as member of the House of Delegates from 1998 through 2000, Chairman of the Local Bar Liaison Committee in 1998 and Co-Chairman of the Citizen’s Advisory Counsel in 1996. Tom has also been actively involved with the state and local Trial Lawyers serving on the state President’s Advisory Counsel from 1991 through 1996.
He has been a speaker at several seminars including: Lafayette Parish Bar Association – “Litigation of a Personal Injury Claim” (1991) and “Justice Reform in Louisiana” (1996); Natural Business Institute – “Trying the Automobile Case in Louisiana” (1991) and Louisiana State Bar Association Leadership Conference (1999).
Tom has sat as Judge Pro Tempore in Lafayette City Court since 1999.
